Three Lists

THE CHIEF SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY:
1. To admonish sinners.
2. To instruct the ignorant.
3. To counsel the doubtful.
4. To comfort the sorrowful.
5. To bear wrongs patiently.
6. To forgive all injuries.
7. To pray for the living and the dead.

THE CHIEF CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY:
1. To feed the hungry.
2. To give drink to the thirsty.
3. To cloth the naked.
4. To visit the imprisoned.
5. To shelter the homeless.
6. To visit the sick.
7. To bury the dead.

THE EIGHT BEATITUDES:
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
2. Blessed are the meek: for they shall possess the land.
3. Blessed are they that mourne: for they shall be comforted.
4. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.
5. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
6. Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.
7. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
8. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice's sake: for theirs is the kingdom of God.

  1. I'll admit to weeping a bit here. I'll read the Jefferson Bible. Me and the rest of the world will have to disagree on the particulars. I can't define the ineffable. Treat it as an object.

    I hadn't heard of Jefferson's Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth. Very interesting. Wiki says that new members of Congress are given a copy. Is that still true?

    J. extracted the dicta of Christ, omitting those that were religious. Reminds me of a lady I heard once on the radio who said she brought up her son as a Christian, telling him about the gospels, but leaving out "all the unpleasant parts, such as the crucifixion".

    The idea of assembling ALL the reported words of Christ, in isolation, is valuable. I bought a book at the Nevsky monastery in St. Petersburg (title: Vvedenie v hristianskuyu bibliyu) that has a section that does that, and I liked it a lot.
